Michael Preston grew up in the suburbs of Birmingham, distracted by the post-punk era of late 70s and early 80s new wave music and non-league football.
He spent his late teenage years playing in local bands before becoming a sports journalist with several local newspapers. After working for the NFL as a PR executive, he moved to the United States to work as a communications consultant and freelance correspondent.
He lives in Rhode Island with his wife Jen and an assortment of children and dogs, and spends an increasing amount of time in the French Quarter of New Orleans. He is a frequent visitor to Birmingham, the city he still thinks of as home.
